Why this exists

Fabricated references are a live failure mode, not a hypothetical one — a language model will produce a plausible author list, a plausible title, a plausible year, and a DOI that resolves to something else entirely. The subtler and more common failure is worse: a real paper cited for a claim it does not make. That one survives every automated check, and a reviewer who knows the cited paper will find it in ninety seconds.

External material

Zotero documentation for the manager itself — collection structure, the browser connector, BibTeX export. It covers storing references. It does not cover verifying them, and no reference manager does.

Governing part

None.

The mechanic

Take ten references from your own draft — the ten you are least certain about, not the ten you remember reading.

For each, one row:

| Reference | DOI resolves? | Claim located at | Verdict | |—|—|—|—|

“Claim located at” means a page, section, or figure number where the cited paper actually says the thing you are citing it for. Not “it’s in there somewhere.” If you cannot locate it, the reference is either wrong or the sentence in your draft is, and both are fixed the same way: strike it and rewrite.

Then fix the draft. The table alone is an observation; the corrected draft is the deliverable.

Deliverable

The table, plus a link to the updated draft showing the corrections.

Competency check

Turning it in

This replaces your reading entry for the week you do it. Submit it to that week’s WR assignment in Canvas — the same one you would have submitted anyway. It is not an extra piece of work on top of the log.

You do not submit anything to the milestone yet. When all five skills in M4 are done, submit the M4 — The Manuscript assignment, which is just an index saying which week each one went in.
