Why this exists

A defence fails in two directions and both lose the room. You can dig in and argue with the question, which reads as defensiveness and makes the committee press harder. Or you can concede everything, which reads as not having thought about it and makes them wonder what else you have not considered. The skill is holding a position with evidence while being genuinely easy to talk to, and it is a learnable technique rather than a personality trait.

This is also the lowest-stakes rehearsal you will ever get. The questions in your proposal defence are mostly predictable, and the ones that are not are usually variations on the three you already knew about.

Take this before your defence, wherever you are in the sequence

This milestone is tiered Year 3+ and nothing gates it. If you are proposing next semester, take this skill now — its only real prerequisite is claim, reason, evidence in M3. It is the one skill in the curriculum with a hard external deadline attached, and rehearsing after the defence is worth nothing.

External material

None. This is practice, not reading.

Governing part

None.

The mechanic

Steelman before you answer.

Take the three objections from Claim, reason, evidence. For each one, write the strongest possible version of the criticism, in the critic’s voice, put better than they would put it. Better. If your version of the objection is weaker than what a committee member would say, you have built a strawman and you are rehearsing against nothing.

This is uncomfortable and that is the mechanism. Writing the best case against your own work does three things at once: it tells you which objections you can actually answer, it makes you visibly fair when you do answer, and it occasionally tells you the critic is right — which is much cheaper to learn now.

Then answer each one, and classify your answer honestly:

Then deliver it live to the lab and let them push back.

One objection must come from outside the academy

At least one of the three should be the kind an employer or programme manager raises rather than a reviewer. They sound different and land harder, because nobody rehearses them:

Steelman them the same way. The three honest answers are the same three as above — it is wrong and here is why; it is right and here is what it costs me; it is right and I cannot fix it yet. Finding out which one you have before an interview, rather than during one, is the whole value.

Deliverable

The three steelmanned objections with responses, plus delivery to the lab group.

Competency check

Turning it in

This replaces your writing entry for the week you do it. Submit it to that week’s WW assignment in Canvas — the same one you would have submitted anyway. It is not an extra piece of work on top of the log.

You do not submit anything to the milestone yet. When all five skills in M5 are done, submit the M5 — The Review Cycle assignment, which is just an index saying which week each one went in.
